Unique Sleeps: The Old Clare Hotel, Sydney, Australia
Unique Sleeps: Amazing hotels hand picked by Expedia Experts. The Old Clare Hotel, Sydney, Australia
Unlike so many refurbished buildings that appear to lose all character, The Old Clare is a hotel that has managed to retain its rich, other era charm whilst seamlessly incorporating a distinct modern flair. Once the site of the heritage-listed Carlton & United Breweries administration building and the iconic Clare Hotel pub, the adjoining buildings have now been transformed into a stylish boutique hotel.
Located on the CBD outskirts, in trendy Chippendale, the 62-room hotel sits alongside bustling Kensington Street – a street awash with cool bars, restaurants and hidden alleyways. It feels a bit off the beaten path but is less than a 20-minute walk from tourist hubs like Darling Harbour and Hyde Park.
The suspended metal staircase, cubic window design, scattering of macabre dentist chairs and encased ladder down into the dark basement help the lobby act as a sort of museum or portal into the building’s heritage. Meanwhile, the reception area follows a similar design to the pub with a yellow art deco desk, swinging saloon door and splattering of band posters.
The rooms are the real highlight of the show with their tall ceilings and mix of wooden window frames, timber panelling and exposed brick walls that really showcase the building’s origins. The eclectic décor is again a cool combination of modern iron lighting fixtures, heavy machinery lamps, unique armchairs and vintage furniture.
The plush super king sized beds are contemporary yet melt-in-the-bed comfortable and the free standing baths and/or overhead rain showers really add to the New York loft feel of the rooms. But it is the little details that help give that extra quirk factor with the ‘dirty laundry’ washing bags, Triumph and Disaster bath products and cosy inscribed bathrobes.
The Clare bar, brimming with locals enjoying an after work beverage, is located beside the reception – giving guests the perfect opportunity to get a taste of Sydney life. And in the spirit of mixing the old with the new, the slick rooftop bar complete with heated pool and luxurious lounging deck, provides a perfect contrast to the retro downstairs pub. With these two watering holes as well as two top restaurants, Automata and Kensington Street Social, you’ll be spoilt for choice in terms of where to whet your whistle.
The Old Clare could best be described as the hipster hotel with mass appeal – perfect for the traveller looking for something a little less generic and a little more eccentric!
