Sling Yourself Skyward in Singapore

Singapore flyerIt’s been a long time coming, but at last the huge, huge, HUGE ferris wheel in Singapore – the one that makes the London Eye look like a pipsqueak – is open. It's the latest Singapore attraction, and it's pretty impressive.

Take a ride on a good day, and you'll be able to see not just the island metropolis, but as far afield as Malaysia and Indonesia. On a bad day, although you mightn’t see past Singapore, you’ll certainly enjoy unparalleled views. And, of course, the prestige of having ridden the world’s biggest wheel. Yes, I’m talking about the Singapore Flyer.

You can also book a ticket on-line, which might not be a bad idea, as they’re in mighty big demand. And you can read a bit more about The Flyer on Jaunted.

The Singapore Flyer stands at the entrance to Marina Bay, in a landscape that is gradually being transformed to complement it. There are hotels within walking distance, Orchard Road is around 10 minutes by cab, and the nearest MTR stop is City Hall. A half-hourly return shuttle service operates between here and the Flyer (S$4 per adult) from 10am to 8pm daily.

A ride on the monster costs S$29.50, with reduced rates for seniors and children. To blast past the queues, you can pay extra (S$52.50) and enjoy Express Boarding. But be warned – you may still have around 20 minutes to wait. However, you’ll be accompanied by an in-flight guide who’ll point out the sights.

Pay a bit more still (S$69) and you can enjoy a cocktail during your ride. Finally, if you want to go really mad, you can book a capsule all to yourself for s$1000 – and invite 27 friends along for the ride. Sorry, flight.

The big wheel takes half an hour to complete its circle, with unobstructed views at all times for all passengers. Sounds like raffles slingfun. You could follow it up with a Singapore Sling in the Long Bar at Raffles, combining one of the city’s oldest attractions with its newest.

PS... I was joking about the London Eye. It’s no pipsqueak. But the Flyer is 30 metres higher!
