Amazing Tailored Clothing in the Seaside Village of Hoi An

Hoi AnIf you’re travelling to Vietnam and plan to shop for handmade clothing, footwear and other pretty things, save some luggage space for a few days in the ancient town of Hoi An.

Roughly halfway between Vietnam’s two biggest cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), the seaside village of Hoi An is a must-see travel destination for all travellers.

Once the biggest port in Vietnam, known by sailors worldwide for its silk, Hoi An is actually two cities in one. At its heart lies the Old Town, a partially-restored, living example of life in South-East Asia during the 15th-19th centuries. Surrounding this is a modern township of French colonial houses, temples and markets.

The tailored clothing, footwear, lanterns, wall hangings and carvings that made Hoi An are still available today, some updated to appeal to western tastes, and still of the highest quality.

And the prices are amazing. A two piece suit can be tailored for as little as $USD50 ($AUD56), a sun dress for $USD5 ($AUD6), and a pair of all- leather riding boots for less that $USD100 ($AUD111).

The tailors of Hoi An are gifted mimics, and studiously reproduce items guided only by pages torn out of magazines. For best results, consider photographing or packing any items from home that you might like reproduced, as most tailors’ collections of fashion mags are pretty limited, favouring the '80s and '90s. It also pays to be explicit with your order, for example don’t assume your tailor will use black cotton with a black suit, or that the suit will be lined.

The other highlight of Hoi An is the food, particularly the local specialities, White Rose and Cao Lau. White Rose is a prawn, wrapped up in a rose-shaped dumpling, and Cao Lau is a pork, vegetable and rice noodle dish - authentic Cao Lau noodles are made with water from a particular well in Hoi An.

Getting to Hoi An is easy. From Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, Vietnam Airlines fly direct to Danang daily, for less than $AUD100. From Danang Airport catch a taxi to Hoi An – the half hour trip costs around $AUD10 – or alternatively take the bus.

Flights to Ho Chi Minh City have been getting progressively cheaper over the last twelve months, as low-cost carriers compete for south-east Asian fares. Return flight prices from Sydney vary from $AUD1000 to $AUD1,400.

I think the clothes are over rated.  I had a jacket tailor made and it was great, but my husbands and my trousers were absolute rubbish.  They were badly made.  I also had shoes made they , and lasted approcx half a dozen wears.  Perhaps there are good tailors but we missed them.

We spent 5 days in Hoi An and were of the opinion that the hand made clothing was overpriced and consquently did not buy any.

I agree: Hoi An is indeed a must see travel destination. There is plenty to do in Hoi An, and there is even a quiet palm-fringed beach nearby. You could check this great website www.vietnamonline.com.au

they offer Hoi An and you'll visit the historic temple complex of My Son and you can lazily browse the streets looking for a friendly tailor to sew your made-to-measure outfit. For the budding chefs among you, they offer a Vietnamese cookery lesson with fresh local ingredients. Or, if you would prefer something a little more active, you can take a cycle trip of the area. I did this independent tour and we stayed in the most charming little hotel in a central location with a lovely swimming pool. Vietnam and Hoi An is great not just for a tailor made costume.

We mentioned to a street vendor that we were looking for a tailor to alter some clothes  - She said I can alter your clothes, come with me. She took us to her tailor shop a few metres away. I arranged to get some clothes altered then was persuaded to get some clothes made. i didn't like any fabrics she had. I was dragged off to the market where i picked out 2 possible choices. I wanted 2 dresses made by copying a dress I had. A very gay young man appeared at the shop and was giving all the designer talk. By the time we got around to talking cost the fabric was being cut out and sent off. I was not happy with the cost but was persuaded that I was getting a good deal and lining and top tailoring.....Later during our holiday after going to Saigon and getting shirts made for $8 including fabric and a dress made for an elderly mother for $12 I realised I had been ripped off by more than A$100 in Hoi An by Em Ma. Be on the look out for her...As you cross over the Cam Nam Bridge from the Pho Hoi Riverside resort hotel she has a stall on the first street corner on the right. Her tailor shop called NANA or that of a family member is on the right hand side next to BIBI shoes and SANDAL on Hoang Dien St. The clothes were badly made, hems not straight and they had to re do the dress I wanted copied as they didn’t copy the design properly. The lining which was not shaped properly made the dress look like a sack. I had to get the dresses fixed up yet again in Saigon.  I also got some shoes made in BIBI and they were lovely, honest and very helpful...even if the shoes don't last long they were only about $10 - $12 a pair. Loved Hoi An - Lyss restaurant opposite the museum good food and price.
